Rottweiler

Rottweiler PhotoThe Rottweilers are medium to large, compact dogs known for their solid black, flat-lying coats with clearly defined rust-colored markings. Although they have double coats, the under coat is very fine and not visible through the outer one which is coarse and of medium length. They belong to the working group and are used as guard dogs, watch dogs, police dogs, and seen in the show-ring. Some claim that German Rottweiler and American Rottweiler are variations of Rotties. German Rotties are said to be shorter, stockier and have a bigger blockier head while the American Rotties are said to be taller and leggier without as blocky a head. Others claim a Rottweiler is a Rottweiler and there is no such thing as a German Rottie.

Practically extinct in the 1800's, the breed population began a comeback in the early twentieth century due to the efforts of enthusiastic breeders centered in Stuttgart.
