Poodle (Standard)
The
Poodle is a noble, elegant and well balanced dog with a slender
muzzle and long neck. They belong to the utility dog group and are now used
as companions and performance dogs. They are spectacular show dogs. The coat
is profuse and curly and is often styled. The gait should be graceful and prancing
with plenty of drive coming from well developed and muscular thighs. They are
extremely intelligent, eager and easy to train because of unusually sensitive
to vocal intonation. Many poodles excel in obedience trials, fly ball and agility.
Temperament
The Standard Poodle tends to be a bit calmer than the smaller variety of poodles.
They need to be with people and dislike being alone. For the most part they
are generally friendly toward strangers, and are excellent with children. They
are high-spirited, happy dogs who love a busy life and being involved in all
family matters.

Living Conditions
They are relatively inactive indoors. They will be okay in an apartment if they
are sufficiently exercised. A small yard will do.
Exercise and Activities
Poodles are not demanding as far as exercise goes. However, they will keep in
better spirits and be fitter if given regular opportunities to run and play
off the leash in a safe area. The Standard Poodle retains its sporting instincts,
great stamina, and needs more activity than the smaller varieties.
Life Expectancy
12-15 years
Grooming
Extensive grooming is needed. They must be bathed regularly and clipped
every six to eight weeks. The ears should be checked regularly for mites and
the ear hair should be pulled out if necessary. Their coats do take a great
deal of care though, generally requiring professional grooming, as well as regular
combing and brushing at home.
Health Problems
They are prone to eye problems such as cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy.
Epilepsy is another disease that plagues all the varieties. Standard Poodles
are also subject to bloat, as any deep chested large dog is. Addison’s
disease is another problem in Standard Poodles. Standard Poodles are also subject
to Granulomatous sebaceous adenitis.
Origin
The Standard Poodle is the oldest of the three poodle sizes with the miniature
and toy varieties developing later. The exact origin of the poodle is unknown,
some say they originated in France and others say that they come from Germany.
It is thought they may have been taken to France and other countries with the
German troops during the 1400’s. They evolved into their present form
in France. They were used in Germany as a water retrieving dog and today some
still have the hunting instinct.
