an alert and intelligent expression. They belong to a toy group. They were originally
bred as companions and today are used for companions and seen in the show ring,
agility, obedience, as hearing dogs for the deaf, visiting hospitals and homes.
They were also called the Continental Toy Spaniel since the Papillon has a tail
which is long and plumed and carried curled over the back. For this reason the
Papillon was once called a Squirrel Spaniel. They are sometimes called the butterfly
dog because the ears look like butterfly wings. It is a friendly, intelligent

Grooming
Daily combing and brushing of the long, silky, single coat is important
and fairly straight forward. These dogs are usually clean and odorless. Bathe
it when necessary. Keep the nails clipped and have the teeth cleaned regularly
because they tend to accumulate tartar. They are average shedders and do not
tangle.
Health Problems
A relatively healthy breed that is free from many diseases that can affect other
smaller breeds. Care must be taken to prevent broken bones by not letting the
dog jump from a great height in case it lands awkwardly. Due to their size,
especially cuddly little puppies, they should be supervised around children
who must be taught that they are not toys to be played with like children do
with their own toys.
Origin
The breed dates back around 700 years although the exact country of origin cannot
be confirmed although it is generally accepted that the origins date back to
the European Toy Spaniels. The Papillon is one of the oldest breeds of dog with
a recorded history in Europe. The breed was originally called the epagneul nain
or dwarf spaniel and sported spaniel-type dropped ears. The dog was later known
as the Continental Toy Spaniel.
