Golden Retriever
The
Golden Retriever is a beautiful, strong, well-proportioned
dog with a feathered, medium-length, cream to golden-colored coat. It is very
popular Gundog breed and is employed today for its compatibility in companionship,
showmanship, obedience and field trials. This breed is known for its glossy,
golden coat of elastic quality and medium length. The Golden Retriever has a
friendly and intelligent expression with perfect symmetry and superb, flowing
movement covering the ground with long, powerful strides. It also performs well
in water and used as Seeing Eye dogs.
Temperament
The Golden Retriever adore children and love to be involved in all family matters,
whether indoors or outdoors. They are primary a retriever and are therefore
very orally fixated. They will attempt to drag, pull or carry anything they
can fit into their mouths. They also have very little guarding instincts. While
unlikely to attack, Golden Retriever makes good watchdogs, loudly signaling
a stranger's approach.

Grooming
The Golden Retriever has a double coat that needs regular brushing
and bathing using high quality shampoo. During shedding season, a bit more attention
to the brushing and combing will help the dog stay more comfortable and keep
your house from becoming too hairy.
Health Problems
They are prone to hip dysplasia and congenital eye defects. OFA and CERF certification
are important from both parents. Parents should also be checked for Von Willebrand's
disease and heart problems. Skin allergies are very common in Golden Retriever.
Origin
The Golden Retriever is believed to be descended from Caucasus sheepdogs. After
Lord Tweedmouth brought some of these sheepdogs from Russia to Scotland, they
became known as Guisachan Retriever. Consequently, Lord Tweedmouth developed
the breed during the 19th century by crossing one of these retrievers with Tweed
Water Spaniels. Hence the Golden Retriever came into their own at this time
as a distinct breed.
