Beagle
The
Beagle is a medium-sized dog and belongs to the hound group.
It is very similar in appearance to a Foxhound with just a smaller and solid-looking
version. They are sturdy and bold little dogs who are the very essence of quality.
They have kindly expressions and are compact and athletic. Beagles have a keen
tracking instinct and an excellent sense of smell, which has seen them employed
as detection dogs for prohibited agricultural imports and foodstuffs in quarantine
around the world. The Beagle has a sleek, easy-care, short coat which can come
in any hound color, tri-color, black and tan, red and white, orange and white,
or lemon and white. The coat is close, hard and of medium length.
Temperament
The Beagle is a gentle, sweet, lively and curious dog that just loves everyone
and children friendly too. They have a loud baying cry that was a pleasure to
hunting horsemen but can be disturbing to family and neighbors. Beagles have
a tendency to follow their own noses. They may take off on their own exploration
if let off their restriction in an unfenced area.

This can lead him to barking, digging, and escaping. A daily walk is strongly
recommended because they like to go out and they need the exercise.

9 - 15 years
Grooming
A weekly brush will keep it in good condition and bathing when necessary.
Shedding is about average for this breed. The ears need to be checked and cleaned
often to prevent infections, as is common to dogs with pendulous type of ears.
Health Problems
They are prone to heart disease, epilepsy, eye and back problems. Also prone
to chondroplasia, aka dwarfism (warped front legs, like a Basset's).
Origin
The Beagle is one of the most popular scent hounds because of his energy, willingness,
and sweet disposition. The breed probably originated as a cross between the
Harrier and other hounds in England. They have been used in packs, alone, and
in pairs for hunting hare, pheasant and quail. They also served as an excellent
narcotics detection dog and make a fine family companion. Unfortunately, because
they are fairly uniform in size and small, Beagles are often used for medical
experimentation.
